Le CO₂ impliqué dans ce phénomène provient du méthane (CH₄) contenu dans le gaz naturel traité par le TEG. Lors du avec le TEG, le gaz naturel peut contenir des traces de CO₂ qui ne sont pas totalement éliminées en amont, et qui, en présence d’eau, favorisent une corrosion acide.
